Off-Broadway’s long-running hysterical musical hit is based on the 1960 cult horror movie spoof by Roger Corman. Seymour, the down-and-out skid row floral assistant in love with ditzy blonde co-worker Audrey, finds his chance for success and romance when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving. Soon his “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore that offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, eventually threatening everyone in sight. Also on hand is a trio of female doo-wop street urchins who comment in song on the action every step of the way. The spicy rock-and-jazz score by the award-winning team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken features such numbers as “Suddenly Seymour”, “Feed Me” and the title song.
“This horticultural horror will have you screaming with laughter.” New York Post
